Siegbert Tarrasch fue uno de los mejores ajedrecistas y uno de los líderes de ajedrez más influyentes a finales del siglo XIX y a inicios del siglo XX. Hacia 1903, había ganado 7 de los 13 torneos en los que había participado, . Fue teórico del ajedrez, contribuyó a asimilar las enseñanzas de Wilhelm Steinitz, llevándolas a un mayor grado de refinamiento, con lo cual, el juego experimentó un progreso importante.
