—  Ezra Taft Benson President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 1899 - 1994

„Heart, my heart, so battered with misfortune far beyond your strength,
up, and face the men who hate us.“

—  Archilochus Ancient Greek lyric poet -680 - -645 a.C.

Variant translations:
Soul, my soul, don't let them break you,
all these troubles. Never yield:
though their force is overwhelming,
up! attack them shield to shield...

Take the joy and bear the sorrow,
looking past your hopes and fears:
learn to recognize the measured
dance that orders all our years.
"Archilochos: To His Soul" : A fragment, as translated from the Greek by Jon Corelis
Fragments
Contexto: Heart, my heart, so battered with misfortune far beyond your strength,
up, and face the men who hate us. Bare your chest to the assault
of the enemy, and fight them off. Stand fast among the beamlike spears.
Give no ground; and if you beat them, do not brag in open show,
nor, if they beat you, run home and lie down on your bed and cry.
Keep some measure in the joy you take in luck, and the degree you
give way to sorrow. All our life is up-and-down like this.

„Von Linden really should know me well enough by now to realise that I am not going to face my execution without a fight. Or with anything remotely resembling dignity.“

„Your heart is as fresh as your face; and that is well. The useless men are those who never change with the years.“

—  J. M. Barrie Scottish writer 1860 - 1937

Fuente: The Little Minister (1891), Ch. 3 : The Night-Watchers
Contexto: Your heart is as fresh as your face; and that is well. The useless men are those who never change with the years. Many views that I held to in my youth and long afterwards are a pain to me now, and I am carrying away from Thrums memories of errors into which I fell at every stage of my ministry. When you are older you will know that life is a long lesson in humility.

„All the human kind is but one family, dispersed over the face of the whole earth; all men are brothers, and ought to love each other as such.“

—  François Fénelon Catholic bishop 1651 - 1715

Tout le genre humain n’est qu’une famille dispersée sur la face de toute la terre. Tous les peuples sont frères, et doivent s’aimer comme tels.

„If we are to go only half way, or reduce our sights in the face of difficulty, in my judgment it would be better not to go at all.“

—  John F. Kennedy 35th president of the United States of America 1917 - 1963

1961, Speech to Special Joint Session of Congress
Contexto: Let it be clear — and this is a judgment which the Members of the Congress must finally make — let it be clear that I am asking the Congress and the country to accept a firm commitment to a new course of action — a course which will last for many years and carry very heavy costs: 531 million dollars in fiscal '62 — an estimated seven to nine billion dollars additional over the next five years. If we are to go only half way, or reduce our sights in the face of difficulty, in my judgment it would be better not to go at all.

Kofi Annan Foto

„We are not only all responsible for each other’s security. We are also, in some measure, responsible for each other’s welfare.“

—  Kofi Annan 7th Secretary-General of the United Nations 1938 - 2018

Truman Library address (2006)
Contexto: We are not only all responsible for each other’s security. We are also, in some measure, responsible for each other’s welfare. Global solidarity is both necessary and possible. — It is necessary because without a measure of solidarity no society can be truly stable, and no one’s prosperity truly secure. That applies to national societies — as all the great industrial democracies learned in the twentieth century — but, it also applies to the increasingly integrated global market economy that we live in today. It is not realistic to think that some people can go on deriving great benefits from globalization while billions of their fellow human beings are left in abject poverty, or even thrown into it. We have to give our fellow citizens, not only within each nation but in the global community, at least a chance to share in our prosperity.
