Alan Watts fue un conocido autodidacta. Becado por la Universidad de Harvard y la Bollingen Foundation, obtuvo un máster en Teología por el Seminario teológico Sudbury-Western y un doctorado honoris causa por la Universidad de Vermont, en reconocimiento a su contribución al campo de las religiones comparadas.
