Edward Ned Kelly fue el más famoso bushranger de Australia y para muchos australianos,[1]​ un héroe popular por su desafío a las autoridades coloniales. Hijo de un hombre irlandés, nació en Victoria, y siendo aún joven tuvo un altercado con la policía, después de un incidente en su hogar. La policía fue en su búsqueda y después del asesinato de tres policías, él y su cuadrilla decidieron convertirse en proscritos. Un violento enfrentamiento final con la policía en Glenrowan, en el que Kelly vestía casco y armadura de placas metálicas, condujo a su captura y juicio. Fue colgado en Melbourne Gaol en 1880. Según dos periódicos de la época, The Age y The Herald, sus últimas palabras fueron: «Así es la vida».
