El 23 de agosto de 2013, anunció que dejaría su cargo en 12 meses. El 4 de febrero de 2014 se anunció que Satya Nadella es el nuevo director ejecutivo de la empresa en sustitución de Ballmer.

Finalmente el 19 de agosto de 2014, Steve Ballmer anuncio que dejaba completamente su cargo dentro de Microsoft Corporation.
