“Una fotografía no es una pintura, un poema, una sinfonía, un baile. No es sólo una imagen bonita, no es un ejercicio de técnicas contorsionistas y pura calidad de impresión. Es, o debería ser, un documento significativo, una declaración penetrante, que se puede describir con un término muy simple: selectividad. Para definir la selección, uno puede decir que debe centrarse en el sujeto del tema que te golpea con fuerza con su impacto y excita tu imaginación en la medida en que te ves obligada a tomarla. Las imágenes se desperdician a menos que la fuerza motriz que te impulsó a la acción sea fuerte e inspiradora.”

Original: «A photograph is not a painting, a poem, a symphony, a dance. It is not just a pretty picture, not an exercise in contortionist tecniques and sheer print quality. I t is or should be a significant document, a penetrating statement, wich can be descibed in a very simple term - selectivity. To define selection, one may say that it should be focussed on the kind of subject matter which hits you hard with its impact and excites your imagination to the extent that you are forced to take it. Pictures are wasted unless the motive power which impelled you to action is strong and stirring».
