Gloria María Milagrosa Fajardo García ,[2]​conocida artísticamente como Gloria Estefan, es una cantante, compositora, actriz y empresaria cubano-estadounidense, nieta de emigrantes españoles, de Asturias. Apenas contaba 16 meses de edad cuando su familia, por razones políticas, abandonó la isla alojándose en Miami ya que su padre en ese tiempo era guardaespaldas de la esposa del dictador Fulgencio Batista.[3]​

Estuvo en la cárcel durante bastante tiempo. Unos años después regresó a Estados Unidos e ingresó en la Armada Norteamericana, luego fue transferida a Texas, lugar al que se mudó toda la familia. En Texas nació Rebecca, la hermana de Gloria.[4]​

A lo largo de su carrera, Gloria ha vendido más de 120 millones de discos en todo el mundo,[5]​ 31,5 millones de ellos en los Estados Unidos,[6]​[7]​ lo que la convierte en una de las artistas musicales con mayores ventas de todos los tiempos. Considerada como la «Madre del Pop Latino»,[8]​ Estefan ha ganado múltiples premios y reconocimientos; entre ellos, siete premios Grammy. Posee una estrella en el Paseo de la fama de Hollywood.

El diario británico The Sun la ubicó en el puesto número 13 de las 50 cantantes que jamás serán olvidadas.[9]​

Tras cursar estudios de psicología en la universidad, se unió a un grupo que tocaba música latina, donde comenzó a cantar.

Tras varios conciertos, entró a formar parte del grupo de Emilio Estefan como cantante, cambiando el nombre del grupo por el de The Miami Sound Machine. Gloria Estefan y Emilio se casaron en 1978.[10]​

En 1980 nació el primer hijo de la pareja, Nayib. Ese mismo año falleció el padre de Gloria. También en 1980, comenzaron a publicar sus primeros trabajos: Renacer, Miami Sound Machine, Imported. En estos discos se mezclaban sonidos latinos con letras en español y en inglés.[10]​

En 1981 la CBS les ofreció un contrato con el que se dieron a conocer por toda Latinoamérica y publicaron varios discos más con The Miami Sound Machine.[10]​

Tiene la Medalla de Oro de las Bellas Artes 2017, concedida por el Gobierno de España.[11]​ Wikipedia

“My family was musical on both sides. My father's family had a famous flautist and a classical pianist. My mother won a contest to be Shirley Temple's double -- she was the diva of the family. At 8, I learned how to play guitar. I used to play songs from the '20s, '30s and '40s in the kitchen for my grandmother. After my dad was a prisoner in Cuba for two years, we moved to Texas, where I was the only Hispanic in the class. And, underneath it all, African drums and rhythm. The concept of "90 Millas" starts with the songs of the '40s. We invited 25 masters of Latin music -- giants on the cutting edge of creativity, musicians who pushed it out to the world, young Cuban artists and Puerto Ricans who are huge -- so we could blend cultures and generations. So it is like coming home, but not exactly to the old Cuba.”
