Nassim Nicholas Taleb es un ensayista, investigador y financiero libanés nacionalizado estadounidense. Es también miembro del Instituto de Ciencias Matemáticas de la Universidad de Nueva York.

Se considera a sí mismo «empirista escéptico» y cree que los científicos y los financieros sobreestiman el valor de la explicaciones racionales sobre datos del pasado e infravaloran el peso de la aleatoriedad en esos datos. Continuador de una larga línea de filósofos escépticos como Sexto Empírico, Algazel, Pierre Bayle, Montaigne y David Hume al considerar que el pasado no puede usarse para predecir el futuro.
