Paul Michael Romer es un economista, empresario y activista estadounidense. Jim Yong Kim, presidente de la institución, el 24 de enero de 2018, comunicó al personal la renuncia de Romer, que ocupaba el cargo de Economista Jefe del Banco Mundial desde junio de 2016 [1]​ y Vicepresidente Senior del Banco Mundial.[2]​[3]​

Paul Romer es muy crítico con la evolución teórica de la macroeconomía, los economistas ortodoxos y específicamente con los economistas neoclásicos de las últimas décadas -post-realistas producto del neoliberalismo-. Considera que se hace un uso excesivo de la modelización matemática que se ha demostrado inútil y peligrosa para el manejo de la economía real, constituyendo una posición puramente ideológica que es capaz de obviar y negar las causas de la Gran Recesión.[4]​[5]​[6]​[7]​[8]​[9]​
