Cecil John Rhodes [1]​ fue un empresario, colonizador y político británico. Gran defensor de la colonización, fundó el país que a su muerte llevaría su nombre, Rodesia, cuyo territorio está actualmente dividido entre Zambia y Zimbabue. El fundador de la influyente Fundación Rhodes fue también el fundador de la compañía De Beers, que en la actualidad controla el 60 % del mercado de diamantes en bruto del mundo y que en un tiempo llegó a comercializar el 90 %.
