“A veces aquí en Cuba recalcamos positivamente cuántos científicos tenemos, cuántos médicos tenemos. Es un logro tener tantos médicos, tantos dentistas y profesionales de la salud, pero estas estadísticas, si bien son loables, no cuentan toda la historia. Tenemos que asegurarnos de que aquellos que buscan la ciencia se apasionen por ella, que la ciencia es lo que los mantiene comprometidos y entusiasmados. Si eso significa que preparemos a menos científicos, ¡formemos a menos científicos! Es una cuestión de calidad, no de cantidad.”

Original: «Sometimes here in Cuba we put a fine point on how many scientists we have, how many doctors we have. It’s an accomplishment to have so many doctors, so many dentists and health professionals, but these statistics, while laudable, don’t tell the whole story. We have to ensure that those who pursue science are passionate about it, that science is what keeps them engaged and excited. If that means we’re training fewer scientists, let’s train fewer scientists! It's a question of quality not quantity».

“En ese entonces (cuando fue nombrada directora) era muy raro que una mujer dirigiera una institución científica. (…) Pero las mujeres tienen que trabajar el doble para llegar a ese nivel; por lo general, son responsables de resolver los problemas relacionados con sus hijos o el hogar, y también hay un cierto nivel de sesgo de género que las mujeres deben superar, especialmente en ese entonces ya que era así, por lo que fue una novedad tener una mujer directora. No fue fácil. Pero donde otras personas ven limitaciones y dificultades, yo veo una oportunidad.”

But women have to work doubly hard to reach that level—they’re usually responsible for resolving issues related to their children or home for instance, and there’s also a certain level of gender bias women have to overcome—especially back then since it was so novel to have a women director.
