Nicolás Steno,[1] nacido Niels Steensen,[2] Nicolaus Steno en latín[3] , fue un polímata, médico, y anatomista danés del siglo XVII, considerado el padre de la geología. Tras convertirse al catolicismo, murió como obispo misionero.
El 23 de octubre de 1988, después de un proceso de 50 años, fue declarado beato por la Iglesia católica en una ceremonia celebrada por el papa Juan Pablo II ante 20 000 devotos en la basílica de San Pedro.[4]
