Alexander McCall Smith, CBE , es un escritor y profesor universitario escocés.

Aunque nació en Rodesia del Sur, volvió a Escocia para sus estudios, para volver posteriormente a Botsuana, donde enseñó derecho en la Universidad de Botsuana.

Conocido principalmente como escritor, ha escrito libros juveniles, y varias novelas de detectives encuadradas en varias series: La Agencia de Detectives para Señoras nº 1, sobre una detective, Precious Ramotswe, en Gaborone, y El club de filosofía de los domingos. Asimismo ha escrito varias recopilaciones de relatos cortos.
