Husáyn ibn Ali ibn Abi Tálib , nombre también transcrito como Hussein, Huséin, Husáin, etc., fue el segundo hijo de Alí y de la hija de Mahoma, Fátima . Nació el tercer día de Shaabán 4 AH / 8 de enero de 626, en Medina y murió el 10 de Muharram 61 AH / 10 de octubre de 680, en Karbala. Es un personaje venerado por el islam chií, que conmemora su martirio en una festividad llamada Ashura y es un día de luto para los musulmanes chiitas, y es respetado asimismo por los musulmanes sunníes por su pertenencia a la Ahl al-Bayt o casa de Mahoma.[1]

Fátima murió joven, dejando a Husáyn y Hasan huérfanos de madre. Parece ser que ambos hermanos tuvieron una muy buena relación con su abuelo, el profeta Mahoma, y heredaron las disputas en las que se vio envuelto su padre Alí por el califato. Husáyn se casó con Shahr Banu , una de las hijas del último emperador sasánida, Yazdgard III. Le sucedió su hijo Ali Zayn al-Abidin.

La ira por la muerte de Husáin se convirtió en un grito de guerra que ayudó a socavar y finalmente derrocar al califato Omeya.
