Leo Strauss David fue un filósofo político y clasicista germano-estadounidense. Nacido en una familia judía, posteriormente emigró a Estados Unidos. Pasó la mayor parte de su carrera como profesor de ciencias políticas en la Universidad de Chicago, donde enseñó a varias generaciones y publicó 15 libros.

Originalmente educado en la tradición neo-kantiana con Ernst Cassirer e inmerso en el trabajo de los fenomenólogos Edmund Husserl y Martin Heidegger, Strauss posteriormente enfocó sus estudios en los textos griegos de Platón y Aristóteles, recorriendo sus interpretaciones mediante la filosofía judía e islámica, y animando a la aplicación de sus ideas a la teoría política contemporánea.
