Rita Levi-Montalcini fue una científica italiana especializada en neurología. Descubrió el primer factor de crecimiento conocido, el factor de crecimiento nervioso, por el que en 1986 recibió el Premio Nobel de Fisiología o Medicina compartido con Stanley Cohen. Al término de la Segunda Guerra Mundial emigró a Estados Unidos, donde trabajó en el laboratorio de Viktor Hamburger del Instituto de Zoología de la Universidad Washington en San Luis .
