“La psicología, al fin y al cabo, y en este sentido guarda claras similitudes tanto con el marxismo como con la tradición judeocristiana, propone una narración de autoengaño, sufrimiento necesario, declive y caída, seguida del alumbramiento de una conciencia y conocimiento de uno mismo, autosuperación y, en última instancia, recuperación. A mí me llama la atención, en las memorias de los centroeuropeos nacidos en torno al cambio de siglo, el número de personas (judíos sobre todo) que comentan lo en boga que estaban en aquella época el análisis, la «explicación», las categorías de la nueva disciplina (neurosis, represión, etcétera). Esta fascinación por profundizar más allá de la explicación superficial, por desmontar mistificaciones, por encontrar una historia que resultaba tanto más verdadera cuanto más la negaran aquellos a quienes describía, guarda una asombrosa semejanza con los procedimientos del marxismo.
En la versión freudiana, como en la marxista, la consideración clave es una fe ilimitada en el inevitable éxito del resultado si el proceso en sí mismo es correcto: dicho de otra forma, si se ha entendido correctamente y se ha superado el daño o el conflicto previo, se llega necesariamente a la tierra prometida. Y esta garantía de éxito es de por sí suficiente para justificar el esfuerzo necesario para llegar ahí. En palabras del propio Marx, él no se dedicaba a escribir las recetas de los libros de cocina del futuro; él simplemente prometía que esos libros de cocina futuros existirían si utilizábamos correctamente los ingredientes de hoy.”

“Some people, myself included, advocated foreign intervention in Bosnia and Kosovo while opposing our adventure in Iraq. Sam Moyn might find this inconsistent, but (on this occasion at least) it is the world that is inconsistent, not us. During the Balkan wars individuals’ rights were under ascertainable threat in real time. Outside intervention could make a difference, and it did. This was not the case in Iraq. We should always be suspicious of the invocation of universal “rights” as a cover for sectional interests. But it doesn’t follow from this that talk of rights is “really” always about something else. Sometimes it is, and sometimes it isn’t. How, then, should we adjust our response? Well, there is a serviceable Keynesian answer to that: “When the facts change, I change my mind. What do you do?””
