Jair Messias Bolsonaro [2]​es un militar de reserva y político brasileño,[3]​ es el presidente electo de la República, cargo que empezará a ejercer de manera efectiva el 1 de enero de 2019. Cumple actualmente su séptimo mandato en la Cámara de Diputados de Brasil, elegido por el Partido Progresista . En las elecciones generales de 2014, fue el diputado federal más votado en el estado de Río de Janeiro con apoyo del 6 % del electorado fluminense . En 2017, fue considerado por el instituto FSB como el parlamentario más influyente en las redes sociales.[4]​ En enero de 2018, anunció su filiación al Partido Social Liberal ,[5]​ el noveno partido político de su carrera desde que fue elegido concejal en 1989.[6]​

Además de él, su hermano Renato Bolsonaro y tres hijos suyos también son políticos: Carlos Bolsonaro , Flavio Bolsonaro , y Eduardo Bolsonaro .[7]​

Se hizo famoso por sus posiciones nacionalistas y conservadoras, por la defensa de la dictadura militar de 1964,[8]​ por sus críticas a la izquierda,[9]​ por haber considerado la tortura como una práctica legítima,[10]​ por sus posiciones contrarias a los derechos LGBT[11]​[12]​ y por varias otras declaraciones controvertidas durante la campaña electoral de Brasil, las cuales le valieron cerca de 30 pedidos de casación[13]​y tres condenas judiciales.[14]​[15]​[16]​ Sus posiciones políticas generalmente son clasificadas como alineadas a los discursos de extrema derecha.[17]​[18]​[19]​

El 7 de octubre de 2018 fue confirmado como candidato a la segunda vuelta de las elecciones presidenciales después de ganar las elecciones y obtener un 46.03 % con el 100 % de votos contados.[20]​ Se enfrentó al candidato por el Partido de los Trabajadores, Fernando Haddad . La segunda vuelta de las elecciones tuvo lugar el 28 del mismo mes y Bolsonaro fue elegido presidente [21]​ por los próximos 4 años.[22]​
