Recep Tayyip Erdoğan es un político y economista turco. Es también el actual presidente de Turquía, cargo que ocupa desde el 28 de agosto de 2014. Ejerció como primer ministro de Turquía entre marzo de 2003 y agosto de 2014, y anteriormente como alcalde de Estambul entre 1994 y 1998 por el Refah Partisi. Se originó de un trasfondo político de Islamismo, e identificándose como demócrata conservador. En 1998 se le prohibió tomar cualquier puesto en la administración pública y fue sentenciado a diez meses en la cárcel por haber leído un poema de tipo intolerancia religiosa en la provincia de Siirt. Con el abandono a la política abiertamente islamista, fundó el Partido de la Justicia y el Desarrollo en 2001, ganador de la elección de 2002.
