Gro Harlem Brundtland es una política noruega miembro del Partido Laborista. Ocupó el cargo de primera ministra de Noruega en tres ocasiones .
Como gobernante, se enfrentó a una crisis económica severa en la década de 1980, donde implementó medidas de austeridad que le atrajeron impopularidad. Al obtener el cargo nuevamente en 1990, consolidó una imagen positiva en la vida política de su país, pero su objetivo principal, su postura sobre la incorporación de Noruega a la Unión Europea, fue derrotada. En el ámbito internacional, fue directora general de la Organización Mundial de la Salud de 1998 a 2003, y en 2007 fue nombrada Enviada Especial de las Naciones Unidas para el Cambio Climático.
